Fungal Ear Infection

Fungal ear infections are common in humid and warm tropical countries. It is something we commonly see in an ENT Specialist Clinic. These infections typically cause blockage, itching, and pain. There is usually an accumulation of dead skin and fungal debris in the ear canal. As fungal ear infections are less common than bacterial ear infections, many GPs will prescribe antibiotic ear drops initially. There is usually a poor response to these ear drops as they do not eradicate fungi and in many cases, symptoms will worsen.

ENT specialists can treat this infection with microsuction of the ear canal and may instill an ointment in your ear or prescribe anti-fungal ear drops. It is important to keep your ear canals dry when you shower and avoid swimming.

Some patients with eczema and psoriasis are more prone to these fungal ear infections. The dead skin accumulates in the ear canal and when moist is an ideal environment for a fungal infestation.
