However, if your raspy or hoarse voice persists, becomes progressively worse, or is affecting your daily life, it should be assessed by an ENT specialist.

Many people assume that a persistent change in their voice is simply part of getting older or the result of overusing their voice. However, a raspy voice that won’t go away should not be ignored.

Most short-term hoarseness caused by a viral infection or temporary voice strain usually improves within one to two weeks. However, if your raspy or hoarse voice persists beyond three weeks, or continues to worsen, it should be assessed by an ENT specialist.

“Hoarseness is never normal,” says Dr Christopher Hobbs, ENT specialist at The ENT Clinic. “Very often, you hear people say, ‘Others think I sound sexy.’ But the hoarseness can worsen to a point when it becomes an effort to speak.”

What Is a Raspy Voice?

A raspy voice, sometimes called a hoarse or rough voice, can sound different from your usual speaking voice. Some people notice that their voice becomes rough, while others find that it trails off into a whisper.

According to Dr Hobbs, other signs of a voice disorder can include pitch breaks and squeaks during speech. Any noticeable change in your voice that persists deserves attention.

What Can Cause a Raspy Voice?

There are many possible causes of persistent voice changes.

Dr Hobbs explains that severe coughing, forceful throat clearing and inefficient voice use can all affect the vocal cords. Inflammation, infections and growths affecting the voice box may also contribute to persistent hoarseness. Although many causes are not serious, ongoing symptoms should always be assessed.

Many people are surprised to learn that everyday habits can place significant strain on the vocal cords over time.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Certain groups are more likely to experience voice problems. People who rely on their voices for work, including teachers, salespeople, managers and others who speak for long periods, may be at greater risk.

Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can irritate the throat and voice box, increasing the risk of voice problems. Smoking is responsible for around 95% of voice box (laryngeal) cancers. If you or someone around you smokes and develops a persistent change in their voice, it is important to seek prompt assessment by an ENT specialist.
Frequent speaking in noisy environments can also place additional stress on the voice.

Looking After Your Voice

Dr Hobbs emphasises that stopping smoking is the single most important step you can take to protect your voice. He also advises avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, which can irritate the throat and voice box.

He also recommends avoiding shouting and whispering, as both can place unnecessary strain on the vocal cords. Staying well hydrated is another simple way to support vocal health.

For people who regularly need to address large groups or crowds, using a microphone can help reduce the effort required to project the voice.

When Should You See an ENT Specialist?

Many short-term voice changes improve on their own, particularly after a viral infection. However, a raspy voice that persists or becomes progressively worse should be assessed.

You should also seek prompt medical attention if your hoarseness is accompanied by difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, coughing up blood, a neck lump, or unexplained weight loss.

A voice that consistently trails into a whisper, develops pitch breaks or squeaks during speech, or requires increasing effort to use should also be investigated.

“If there is a noticeable change in one’s voice, such as when it becomes hoarse and rough, it is worth seeking help,” says Dr Hobbs.

An ENT specialist can examine the voice box and vocal cords to identify possible causes and recommend appropriate treatment or voice care strategies.

Don’t Ignore a Persistent Voice Change

Your voice plays an important role in everyday communication, and ongoing changes should not simply be accepted as part of aging or a busy lifestyle.

While many causes of a raspy voice are treatable, early assessment can help identify problems before they become more significant.

If you’ve noticed a persistent change in your voice, book a consultation with Dr Christopher Hobbs or one of the ENT specialists at The ENT Clinic for an assessment of your vocal health.

Share this blog via:

Most cases of hoarseness caused by a viral infection or temporary voice strain improve on their own.
