Ear canal infections often result from activities like self-cleaning of earwax after swimming or showering. Middle ear infections, on the other hand, usually occur as a complication of colds or sinusitis, which block the Eustachian tube and lead to fluid buildup.

Dr Ho summarises, “The most important thing for parents to understand is that self-cleaning the ears can often do more harm than good, especially in children.”

The Challenges of Differentiating Between Infections

It can be tricky for parents to distinguish between ear canal and middle ear infections since both can cause symptoms like pain and hearing loss. Children might also report a blocked ear sensation during a cold, even without an infection. Attempts to alleviate this feeling through self-cleaning can inadvertently cause an ear canal infection. Additionally, parents may mistake impacted earwax for an ear canal infection, while the real issue might be a middle ear infection. In rare cases, pus from a middle ear infection can burst through the eardrum, creating a secondary infection in the ear canal.

“If your child complains of ear pain or hearing loss, always seek professional advice rather than trying to diagnose or treat it at home.” says Dr. Ho.

The Importance of Early Medical Advice

When it comes to ear infections, timely consultation with a healthcare professional is essential. Proper diagnosis and treatment often require specialized tools and expertise to clean and examine the ears safely. Seeking medical advice early can prevent complications and ensure the best care for your child.

Treating Ear Canal Infections

Effective treatment of ear canal infections involves a three-step approach. First, the ear must be thoroughly cleaned to remove debris or wax that may harbor bacteria. Once the ear is clean, topical antibiotics are applied directly to the site of infection to combat the bacteria. Keeping the ears dry during showers or swimming is the final and equally critical step in the healing process.

Managing Middle Ear Infections

Middle ear infections are usually treated with medications designed to relieve nasal and Eustachian tube congestion. Oral antibiotics may also be necessary to clear up the infection. For children experiencing severe pain or distress, a minor surgical procedure to drain the pus from the middle ear might be recommended. In cases of recurring middle ear infections, evaluating and addressing chronic nasal conditions is an important part of the treatment plan.

Dr Ho

For more information or to book a consultation, contact The ENT Clinic today.
